Dear Colleague:

Here's an advance look at the June 2016 issue of American Cinematographer magazine, which will feature a special focus on summer blockbusters. (All articles are tentative and subject to change.)

Captain America: Civil War
(Disney)

Trent Opaloch reteamed with the directing duo of brothers Anthony and Joe Russo to continue the big-screen adventures of the titular star-spangled Avenger (played by Chris Evans). With significant consequences in store for all the characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Civil War pits hero vs. hero as Captain America and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) find themselves at irreconcilable odds with one another. Opaloch and his collaborators will discuss their approach, which included the extensive use of Arri's Alexa 65 camera system.

The Nice Guys
(Warner Bros.)

Philippe Rousselot, ASC, AFC joined director Shane Black for this period detective-comedy set in 1970s Los Angeles. After hired "messenger" Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) joins forces with private investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling) to find a missing girl, bullets fly, cars chase, and a vast conspiracy spills into the light. Rousselot will discuss pairing anamorphic lenses with Arri Alexa XT cameras for the production, which shot in Atlanta and L.A.

A Beautiful Planet
(Imax)

James Neihouse, ASC and director Toni Myers continue the large-format exploration of outer space and the planet Earth that they began with such projects as Space Station 3D and Hubble 3D. For this Imax documentary — which combined an array of originating formats — the filmmakers worked with NASA to capture footage of our planet as seen from the vantage of the International Space Station, and to visualize the effects humanity has had on the Earth.

Alice Through the Looking Glass
(Disney)

Stuart Dryburgh, ASC, NZCS and director James Bobin followed Alice (Mia Wasikowska) on her return to Wonderland. Her adventures once again find her crossing paths with the likes of the White Queen (Anne Hathaway), the Red Queen (Helena Bonhman Carter) and the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), but this time, Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen) proves to be her greatest foe. Dryburgh and others will detail the U.K.-based shoot.

The June issue's departments will also offer illuminating insights:

Short Takes will go behind the scenes of the Panic! at the Disco music video for "Death of a Bachelor," shot by Eric Bader.

Production Slate will offer a tour of director Ben Wheatley's High-Rise, shot by Laurie Rose, as well as Whit Stillman's romantic costume-comedy Love & Friendship, photographed by Richard van Oosterhout, NSC.

ASC Close-Up will spotlight Society member and educator Frederic Goodich, who has built an extensive body of work shooting commercials, and whose feature credits include Fear No Evil, The Lay of the Land, American Intellectuals, The Affair, Surviving Eden, G.I. Jesus and Mid Life Gangster.
